FAQ's - Digital Double Animation Immersion Program
What sets this program apart from others?
Several things: our instructors are all professionals in the animation field as well as experienced college instructors; we have a very low student to faculty ratio to ensure each student gets plenty of individual attention; the program is hands-on from start to finish, and we offer access to a motion capture studio so students can act out characters’ movements and bring them to life immediately. We’re the only teen program we know of to offer access to a motion capture studio, and we’re the only studio on the west coast that offers markerless motion capture technology.

What is motion capture?
Motion capture, or mocap, is the process of recording movement and translating that movement onto a digital model. In the immersion program, this means that once students have a working 3D character model, they can go into the motion capture studio and act out the movements of their character, thus animating their character- in real time! The advanced session will feature facial motion capture.

What experience level is required to attend?
Because of our small group size (limited to 4 students per session), we don’t require any previous experience with animation. We’re able to accommodate any student who is passionate about learning and willing to jump in and work hard. For the advanced session, previous animation experience or completion of a beg/int (July) session is required.

My child is too young/too old- can s/he still come?
The core ages of the program are 14-19. We will consider highly motivated students outside the age range. Please contact us directly about this.

What will students learn? What is a typical day like?
Students will focus on animation, using Maya, Photoshop and motion capture. We will also work to build core art skills (drawing as it applies to animation), and present information about the animation industry (what it is like to work in the industry, what training you’ll need in this competitive industry, what kind of jobs are available). There is no typical day, but each day will include these elements, as well as a break with snacks provided, and a special presentation on related topics.

How do you choose your faculty?
In our faculty, we look for a passion for animation, deep knowledge of the animation industry and the arts, and a love for teaching and working with teens.

What is the computer to student ratio?
Each student is provided with their own workstation with the programs they will need.

What is the faculty to student ratio?
Each session is limited to four students. There will be one main instructor as well as guest instructors for each session.

Are there any scholarships available?
We do not have any scholarships available at this time. Please send an email if you would like to come but require a scholarship or work/study to attend.

The session I was hoping to attend is full- is there a waiting list?
The registration form has a place to list your session choices. Please list the session you’d like as your top choice, even if it is full. If you are available one week only, we ask that you make a special note of this on your registration form. Sessions may be added at any time as scheduled sessions fill up, so call if you’d like a session added.

Is the deposit refundable?
The $75 deposit is not refundable, except in the case of a session being cancelled.

I don’t know my summer schedule yet- should I still register now?
Yes! The sessions will fill up quickly due to the small number of students. Simply leave the choice of sessions blank on your registration form and note that your schedule is not set yet. We will contact you as sessions begin to fill to select a date.
